John, we will miss your music and compassion... John Denver and his music have touched my life since he sang with the Mitchell trio in the sixties. His voice was so filled with pure, raw emotion. John's rendition of "Whose Garden Was This?" showed me the measure of this man who truly cared about humanity. I loved all his songs for they spoke of the human experience as well as challenged us to act on our commitments and hopes for a better world. "Looking For Space", in which he writes: "On the road of experience, trying to find my own way..." represented his humility and ongoing search for his place in the cosmos. He was "Everyman" (person) in the truest sense of the word. John Denver's gift and legacy to me and the world is that he gave voice to our deepest feelings and conveyed a sense of hope and optimism that is often lacking in our cynical world. He lived his life truly making a difference and his death is a personal tragedy for me. Peace, diana |

I wrote the tribute above immediately following the announcement that John Denver had been killed in a flying accident. It was posted on a newsgroup called alt.fan.john-denver. Connecting with others throughout the internet who shared my sorrow allowed the grieving process for all of us to move forward. I truly appreciate the sincerity of all those who touched my life during that time. John Denver was also a significant mentor of mine in my music teaching career. After attending one of his concerts in the early 70's and watching the eagle fly across several big screens as he sang "I am the eagle, I live in high country...", I was so moved that I resolved to model my public school music concerts in a similar manner. It was at that time that I began to create slide representations for each of my songs. Today the slide show is still a signature trademark of my concerts in MSAD 57 and it is a living reminder of the man whose spirit touched my life. |
