The DownEast Schooner
26' gaff-rigged schooner

'Tranquility'

S chooners have always had a place in my life.  The first book I remember "Pirate's Gold" involved a schooner running from pirates.  From my first ship model (Katy) to my current sailboat (Tranquility) I am a schooner fan.

I have always dreamed of having my own schooner, but never imagined it could happen.  I had never found a small schooner that I could afford to own.  That all changed spring of 1999 when I visited Alexandria Boat Works in Alexandria, NH.  I had gone up with my O'Day Javelin to see what I could trade her for and I found my schooner!

My DES is called Tranquility and was designed by Chuck Paine of Maine and built by Bill Cavanaugh of Mark Marine Inc of Raymond, NH.  She was built in 1981.

'Small Boat Journal' did a write up on the DES in the Small Talk column of the October/November 1981 edition. All the information I have on the boat comes from this article.

The brochure for the Down East Schooner had the line drawings shown on this page and two of the pictures shown on the other pages.

Spoke with the builder and he built 18 Down East Schooners and all 18 are still in service.   I have found three so far.  One located in Dover, NH; one in Camden, ME; and one in Rhode Island.

Sail plan showing the optional topsail Deck plan showing the original and my proposed changes. Since doing this drawing the hatch location has been shifted to starboard. As of October 2002 the cabin is in and work on the new cockpit was halted for the winter. No pictures of construction as my time was spent working on the boat to get her done.
