The Battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington

Fifteen years after the French-Indian War, John Stark volunteered to lead a militia of 1,500 New Hampshire men in the Revolutionary War. On June 16, 1775, Stark lead his men at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Although the British won the battle, they suffered severe losses especially among their officers because of John Stark and his militia. This made it possible for General George Washington to force the British to withdraw from Boston.

Two years later, the Battle of Bennington took place on August 16, 1777. A British raiding party in need of supplies met 1,600 New England militiamen led by General John Stark. There were 207 British killed and 700 taken prisoners while only 30 Americans were killed. The victory by the Americans increased confidence and lead to an American victory at Saratoga.
